Maternity Style (Pt 1)
'Dressing the bump' was something I eagerly anticipated in the early months of my pregnancy. I looked forward to my bump finally 'popping' and all the cute ways to style it. Now that I have less than a month of pregnancy to go, the task is becoming a little less fun and a little more challenging. Keep reading to find out more about my maternity style.
Now more than ever before, comfort is key. With lower back pain and swollen feet at baseline, adding tight, restricting, or uncomfortable clothing is just not a smart choice (I learned this the hard way). So for the first 3/4 of my pregnancy, I squished myself into my regular, pre-pregnancy clothes. Since then, I have invested in a few key maternity clothing pieces.
Maternity pants are a must have. If you dress professionally for work (as I do), a few pairs in various colors are a wardrobe staple. They are so comfortable, I don't know how I am going to transition back to regular pants, post baby. If dressing up is not essential for you (I'm jealous), you can live in leggings and yoga pants!
To go with those maternity pants, I made use of several stretchy cotton tank tops and tees. For me, neutral colors (black, white, gray, beige) fit well into my existing wardrobe. Ones with extra length were especially appreciated. I purchased several tops, both maternity and non. The maternity pants and long tops made it easy for me to continue wearing my favourite sweaters, kimonos, blazers and jackets.
When needing to dress up for an occasion, or for no reason at all, dresses are my go to. Any time pants can be eliminated from the equation, I am more than happy. Dresses are the answer in pregnancy! Your pre-pregnancy dresses (depending on the style), may no longer fit you. Mini dresses suddenly become too short and I found most of my dresses don't have enough room for my bump. I recommend investing in a few maternity dresses.
I found tons of cute maternity clothes from PinkBlush Maternity. They are an online maternity boutique, with everything from plus sizes to nursing clothes. I ordered several spring dresses for a variety of occasions: maternity photos, baby shower, Easter, and just because. Shipping to Canada was reasonable and timely, and everything fit me perfectly (I ordered size smalls- my usual size).
In these photos, I am wearing the White Shimmer Fitted Dress. I love the classy 3/4 length cut, as well as 3/4 length sleeves. The fabric has a beautiful shimmer in person. I feel this dress could be worn all seasons, whether pregnant or not. It is a timeless piece. Just be sure to wear nude coloured undergarments, underneath ;) Another must-have accessory for this dress is a flawless tan, to be sure you aren't washed out. I covered up my winter pastiness with a medium-dark spray tan from Lindsay at Organic Tan Saskatoon.
Another important part of feeling your best during pregnancy is not forgetting to take care of yourself and get pampered! My gorgeous, glowy makeup was done by the talented Holly Decker Makeup Artistry (you will soon be seeing more of her, around here :). Hair by my ride or die stylist, Amber at Salon Vibe. Lashes by Eva at Eyelusionz.
