Playroom Inspiration

I guess it’s only natural that as we are packing up our first family home to move, I’m appreciating it. We’ve lived here for five years and we just finally finished everything. One of the last rooms we completed was the kid’s playroom in the basement. When we moved in, the basement was an open, unfinished concrete room. Since then, we’ve transformed it into a very functional space for our family in a budget-friendly way. Keep reading to learn how…

We chose vinyl plank flooring for it’s price and durability. The kids can spill, drop things, and make messes like kids do, but the floor will withstand it. Our basement has nice big windows, and we wanted to ensure we kept it light and bright, so we chose Simply White paint by Benjamin Moore and lots of pot lights. I would love a washable area rug but we opted for these foam play mats instead. They create a soft area for little ones to crawl, build, and colour on. Plus the tiles are easy to wipe down and clean.

Our little Bella Rina loves to play dress up and as her collection of dresses expanded, we needed to find a way to store them. My husband built this dress rack for Bella’s third birthday present and she loves it! It’s super functional, affordable, and as far as I know, not too difficult to build ;)

The latest addition to the playroom are these Ikea Trofast storage units and bins. They have been a God send! The bins hold so much and each bin can be designated for a specific toy or purpose. For example, we have bins for musical instruments, one for blocks, cars, etc. My plan was to label each bin as well, but we will save that for our new house! We created a desk/ work space for the kids by laying a board across the top of the units, which acts as a counter top. My husband picked up the board from Home Depot and it was a very budget-friendly cut of wood. The wicker stool was a Homesense find. The smaller, wall-mounted Trofast unit holds art and craft supplies, including markers and Play-doh. It’s perfect for keeping these messy items out of the reach of little hands :)

I’m excited to incorporate these toy storage units into our new home and create another space for our littles to love, learn and play in. If you use any of these tips in your playroom, I would love to see them! Tag me on instagram so I don’t miss it!
