Songs to Sing to Babies

If you’ve ever heard me sing before, believe me when I say you would remember it. That’s because my voice is, well, terrible to be honest. But that doesn’t stop me from belting it out any chance I get. I love a powerful ballad; among my favourite songs to sing is Whitney Houston’s “I Will Always Love You.” And when it comes to karaoke, you might just be lucky enough to hear me butcher “You Oughta Know” by none other than Alanis Morissette.

I also love singing my two little ones to sleep. Sometimes I wonder if they are just pretending to be sleeping so that I stop singing ;) Kidding aside, I’m always looking for new lullabies to sing to them before bed. So I recently asked my instagram followers for some new recommendations and was so pleased I did because I found a few songs I am absolutely loving, and can’t believe I didn’t know before. When I find a song that is sweet, soft, and sentimental, I get excited and add it to my playlist. I have a playlist for each of my babes on my phone and I thought it would be fun to share some of my favourites with you.

“WHEN I’M WITH YOU”

-JJ HELLER

“I COULD NEVER COUNT ALL THE WAYS THAT YOU CHANGED ME, BABY.”

This was one of the first songs that I found to sing to Bella that I really connected with. It’s all about how your kids change you for the better. A must add for any new parent.

“LANDSLIDE”

-DIXIE CHICKS

“TIME MAKES YOU BOLDER. CHILDREN GET OLDER. I’M GETTING OLDER TOO.”

Most of you probably already know this song, which I did too, but when I recently listened to it when Luca was born, it brought tears to my eyes (maybe it was the baby blues?). Mostly the lyric I posted above. I’ve never been a Dixie Chicks fan until recently, but TWO of their songs made my list.

“BLACKBIRD”

-SARAH MCLACHLAN

“ALL YOUR LIFE. YOU WERE ONLY WAITING FOR THIS MOMENT TO ARISE.”

A perfect, chill bedtime song I like to sing to both Luca and Bella. Sweet and simple.

“YOUNG MAN”

-JUSTIN TIMBERLAKE

“YOUNG MAN, IF YOU WANNA MAKE GOD SMILE, MAKE PLANS.”

My husband was the one who started singing this song to our newborn son and it melted my heart. The words spoken are from a father to his son, which couldn’t be more sweet. I love hearing him sing it to Luca, and I like to as well.

“HOURGLASS”

-MINDY GLEDHILL

“AND PLEASE DON’T TURN AROUND AND GROW UP WAY TOO FAST.”

This one was recommended by one of my instagram followers and I fell in love with the tune and sentiment. It’s one of those songs that was actually written by a mother for her kids. You can feel the honesty behind it.

“UNDO ORDINARY”

-RIVER MATTHEWS

“FROM YOUR LIPS, YOUR FEET, YOUR EYES, YOUR FINGERTIPS, I NEVER GET TIRED OF LOVING YOU.”

This is also a recent discovery I found while listening to the Singer & Songwriter playlist on Apple Music. Matthew’s voice is beautiful and strong. The song was definitely written about a romantic love, but the meaning can be applied to your little ones too.

“LULLABY”

-DIXIE CHICKS

“HOW LONG DO YOU WANT TO BE LOVED? IS FOREVER ENOUGH?”

This one was recommended by a few of my friends and followers and I just can’t believe I didn’t know about it sooner?! It’s been on repeat ever since and is another tear jerker. Why you gotta do me like that Dixie Chicks?

Other honourable mentions are ‘Growing Up” by Macklemore ft. Ed Sheeran, which we were playing on the regular while I was pregnant with Bella, anxiously awaiting her arrival. And some of your favourites included “Perfect” by Ed Sheeran, “Early Days” by Old Man Ludeke, “A Case of You” by Joni Mitchell, “All you Need is Love” and “‘Til There was You” by The Beatles, “Ho Hey” by The Lumineers, “Songbird” by Fleetwood Mac, “At Last” by Etta James, and anything by Jack Johnson.

Am I missing any must listen to songs??
