Falling for Fall
Does anyone else feel like this time of year has got to be the busiest?! I’m feeling slightly overwhelmed with fall so far. Our new routine is packed with preschool, ballet, music class, swimming lessons, daycare, as well as a few home projects on the go. Plus Luca’s first birthday and party are this week. On top of that, my husband has been working two jobs so our schedule is always a challenge to coordinate.
One thing that adds to the stress of a busy schedule is pushing aside the tasks around the house. When our home gets increasingly messy and I get behind on laundry I feel anxious. I try my best to stay on top of these things to keep our household running smoothly (of course that doesn’t always happen but I do make a conscious effort).
Something that I enjoy doing, is creating beautiful spaces. While on mat leave, I’ve been spending more time at home than usual and I’m taking this as an opportunity to make it into a space our family truly loves. This includes decorating our house for each changing season. It helps me find a little calm within the chaos.
I remember begging my mom to hurry up and pull out the seasonal decor as soon as each season changed. Each fall she would transform our front step for fall with hay bales, pumpkins, and even made her own “pumpkin man,” complete with boots, jeans, a plaid shirt, and pumpkin head.
Ever since we became homeowners four years ago, I have always wanted to create a fall front porch for our family, but I think because it is such a busy time of year, I have never made it happen. This year, I knew I wanted to make the entrance into our home feel like fall so I got started early.
I found some inspiration pictures on Pinterest here and came up with the look I wanted to go for. I usually stick to white flowers or just greenery but I thought a pop of fall colours would be a fun change. Once I had decided on the vibe, I made a visit to my favourite local greenhouse, Dutch Growers. They had a nice selection of hardy fall plants and flowers, as well as cute pots, and pumpkins.
I was mesmerized by the large multicolour mum pots so I chose one with beautiful hues of pink, orange and yellow, and then coordinated the rest of the plants around those tones. I went with two smaller orange mums, as well as ornamental kale, and some vibrant Helenium flowers. All of these plants are hardy and do well when planted in the early fall.
Dutch Growers also had some super cute clay planters and stainless steel pots which gave the front porch a rustic, farmhouse feel. I couldn’t leave without picking up some of their gorgeous pumpkins. I especially love the unique blush pink/pale orange pumpkins they offer. Plus they get all of their pumpkins from local farmers!
I am still on the hunt for a new, possibly layered, front door mat. But otherwise, I am so pleased with how we transformed our front porch for fall! I linked all of my favourite fall Amazon finds here.
I like to include subtle fall decor inside our home as well. I always pick up a bag of mini pumpkins and gourds from Superstore and display them as a centrepiece. Cheap, easy, and cute. The gold and cream ceramic pumpkins were also found at Superstore. I sourced the cotton stems and wreath from Michaels.
Typically, I continue buying more pumpkins and decor throughout the season but I’m already off to a good start this year :)
Happy Fall Y’all,
